We now live in a much different world than we did a year ago—and the changes this global pandemic has forced us all to make may be around much longer than we initially anticipated. But some issues that preceded one of the “least-precedented” years in recent memory, have only gotten worse or more visible and call us all to action.
Equality and Efficiency
One lesson that 2020 taught all of us is that there is still much work to be done to eradicate racial discrimination. Environmental issues impact us all, but they impact the oppressed and underprivileged at higher rates and at higher levels. Negative climate change effects like heat waves, drought, and flooding disproportionately impact communities of color in the U.S. and poorer nations worldwide.
To help Maine do its part to reduce our nation’s output of carbon pollution, Evergreen Home Performance strives to provide Mainers with affordable, effective home efficiency upgrades. We also seek to build a company built on social justice and we advocate for public policies that maximize opportunities for environmental justice for all.
Improving The Environment, One Home at a Time
When we were all in the throes of lockdown back in April, much of the global population headed indoors and scientists watched to see how the earth itself would react. The city of New Delhi reported that fine particulate matter in the air dropped 60%, coyotes were seen on the streets of San Francisco, and astronauts observed changes in the earth from above.
The US still generates 89% of its energy from non-renewable sources, like natural gas, coal, and petroleum. Twenty-one percent of that energy is consumed in our homes. If we are going to start to slow the effects of climate change, we are going to need to address the efficiency of one of our biggest energy consumers: the home.
This is why we started Evergreen Home Performance over a decade and a half ago. We are thinking globally about the harmful effects of human-made carbon emissions, by acting locally to help Mainers live in safe, comfortable, healthy, and efficient homes.
Less Energy, More Comfort
Our quest for efficiency has led to a passion for building science, and we have learned that many of the same home improvements that make a home more efficient will also make it more comfortable, with healthier indoor air quality. By upgrading your windows and doors, properly insulating key areas like the attic, basement, and exterior walls, and even waterproofing or encapsulating your crawl space, your home will certainly be more comfortable. But most importantly, it will also:
Require less energy and/or heating oil
Have a smaller carbon footprint
Be more resilient during a power outage
Reduce demand on Maine’s aging electrical grid
We qualify our customers for Efficiency Maine Rebates and assist with reputable lenders to make our projects affordable.
